Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) offers prescription drug coverage to everyone with Medicare. If you decide not to get Medicare drug coverage when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty.

Medicare Part D, sometimes called PDPs, add drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans. Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes called MA-PDs.

Important dates

When enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan in a given year, keep these dates in mind:

  • October 15 – December 7: This is the Open Enrollment Period, where you can make changes to your Medicare prescription drug coverage for the next year.
  • January 1 – February 14: This is the Disenrollment Period, where you can switch to Medicare Parts A and B from Medicare Part C and if you do so, you will also be able to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to add coverage.
  • January 1 – December 31: You can enroll in any Medicare Prescription Drug Plan during the seven month period listed above*.

When you join, you’ll give your Medicare number and the dates when your Part A and Part B coverage started. This information is on your Medicare Card.

You must have been enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage Plan.
